A brief word about this software. The Spec.Net's Qwik Connect For Windows comes with everything you need to get going in a hurry. Nothing provided ever needs to be registered or paid for in any additional way. Nothing will expire in 30 days. You are free to use this software for your personal use for as long as you like. As you can see by the icons in your program group, you have been given fully functional and licensed programs for News, FTP, Archie, Email, Whois, PING, Finger, and a Winsock written by the Distinct corporation. The Netscape Navigator, is not included on these disks, but we make it quick and easy to get (see step 4) and even easier to configure. Due to licensing/distribution restrictions we couldn't provide Netscape on disk, but you are legally allowed and encouraged to download it and use it. We make getting it a simple matter of point and click. Then you install it using their setup routine. After that we have a utility that will add your information to Netscape ... automatically! All your included software like NewsXpress, Eudora Light, CuteFTP, and Archie are configured automatically during STEP 2 so you don't need to set anything up. You can use them immediately! This software is designed for the novice internet user. The Spec.Net software depends on your Windows software for many of the instructions and tasks that are performed. While you do not need to be an expert in the field of computers to "Surf the 'Net" we highly recommend that you be familiar with the basic Windows techniques, such as: - Using
menus, scroll bars and windows If you are new to Windows or you want to refresh your skills, please consult your Windows documentation. System Requirements To use your
IQC software effectively, you should have the following 1. 486 or
faster personal computer with at least 8 megs of ram and
at Insert disk
1 into your A drive and type A:\Install at the Run
command. After the program has loaded, and you have successfully rebooted, then you need to click on the yellow icons starting with the "Read Me" icon. It is necessary to follow the instructions in the Yellow Boxes, in the order listed, to complete the software installation procedure. Utilities
and configuration icons are as follows: This is an
important one. This is where you need to enter your
username and password. Don't panic if the program fails to find your modem. Sometimes (for whatever reason) it doesn't. Simply enter the com port in manually. If you decide to change your dial in phone number in the future, you may choose to come back here to do it, or better yet do it from the step 3 icon. Who to call and how to do it. You will find instructions for how to make a call (invoke the dialer) and how to hang up the phone and break your connection. Read what you find here, and we suggest that you print out the instructions about how to start a session and end a session until they become second nature. Also, use the step 3 icon to easily change the phone number to call, or to change the status of call waiting on your modem line. Go Get Netscape. When you click on this icon a little window will pop up. PLEASE read the information in the window! When you click on the "Next" button your CuteFTP program will start up. On the right hand side you will see 13 lines entitled "Get Netscape" followed by a number. Since Netscape is so good, the sites may be overcrowded a lot, which is why we give you 13 different choices. READ the information in the little window below the CuteFTP program for help. (If you can't see it, then move the CuteFTP window up until you do.) To try a site, simply double click on one of the 13 sites listed. Watch what happens in the little window within the CuteFTP program at the top. This will give you a status. If it reports "Login incorrect" or "Can't login- disconnecting" DON'T PANIC. All it means is that there are 250 users on this site already and you can't get in right now. Remember you have 12 other sites to try! So hit the F4 key and select another one, until you get in. You are successful when you see the right hand window fill up with filenames. Since Distinct TCP (our winsock) is a 16 bit winsock, you need to download the 16 bit version of Netscape. This is the file that reads n16e122.exe. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE 32 BIT VERSION n32e122.exe BECAUSE IT WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR 16 BIT DISTINCT WINSOCK! This is where you install Netscape (extract the files) and Set it up. First, click on the "Install" button and you will see the files expand. Then click on the "Setup" button which will start the Netscape Setup program. Follow the directions, and we suggest that you put the icon in the Internet Qwik Connect program group so that it shows up with your other icons. Note: If you get an error when you try to run setup that indicates your version of Win32s is out of date, you will need to get the new version from Microsoft. You will need to open CuteFTP and download it. There is an entry provided in the left hand window that reads "Get win32s (PW1118.exe). Download it and install it, then try to install Netscape again. (Windows 95 users do not need to worry about this) This is a great place to find answers to common problems and to learn how to check your mail and use the NewsXpress newsreader. Check here, before you call tech support. Also, there is an IQC FAQ (frequently asked questions) file that you can access from here. This will allow you to do one of 2 things. One is to uninstall all the programs and restore your path and files back to the way they were before The Internet Qwik Connect was installed. The other is to just uninstall the Distinct 16 bit winsock, which will restore any previous version of a winsock, but leaves all of the programs intact and configured. DO NOT MANUALLY GO AROUND YOUR SYSTEM DELETING FILES. USE THE UNINSTALL ICON. Program icons are as follows These represent actual Internet programs that require a PPP session to function. When you click on one your dialer will start and connect you to your provider. This is The Eudora Light program. There is a complete user's manual available from "The Newbie's corner" See your bookmarks once you install and config Netscape under step 5. Look under the "Solutions to common problems and tips" icon for some helpful tips. Use this to resolve who someone is. Try putting in your providers domain name and see what you get. Use this as a diagnostic tool to test if someone out there is operational. Think of it like Internet sonar. You won't use it that much. If ever you want to know what your IP address is (you need to know to use Internet Phone or talk apps.), then click on this icon. This will start CuteFTP. You can upload and download files. Check the help file for information on how to use it and try clicking on stuff with your right mouse button. A utility that a rookie may not use much, but if you need it, here it is. This is NewsXpress. It is a great newsreader, but the built in help is lacking. So check under the Problems icon in your icon group where you will find a lot of help by reading the "Using NewsXpress Qwik Start section. Note: THE FIRST TIME YOU OPEN THE NEWSXPRESS PROGRAM IT WILL START TO DOWNLOAD THE FULL COMPLIMENT OF NEWSGROUPS OFFERED BY YOUR PROVIDER. THIS MAY TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES THE FIRST TIME YOU OPEN THE PROGRAM. IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO THIS. LET IT FINISH. THE NEXT TIME YOU START THE PROGRAM IT WILL CONNECT VERY QUICKLY. This lets you search for software by actual file name. It is also set up to automatically go and retrieve the file by starting CuteFTP on demand. (appears after you complete step 4) - This starts Netscape. This is where you will spend most of your time surfing the web. Check out the bookmarks we have set for you and be sure to visit The Newbie's corner. You need to perform Step 2 (yellow icon step 2) at a minimum before you can dial in and connect. Click on the help button for help in filling out the form. Again, please follow the yellow icons in order before trying to start the program icons or you will have problems. Support for IQC software and your account Having a problem? Here's what you need to do: Many known software solutions are contained in the HELP files that come with your software. Please read the on-line HELP files and suggestions found in the IQC software and your Windows Help files if you encounter problems. GETTING HELP STEP 1 - You should first check the information you will find under the question mark icon called "Tips and solutions for common problems" In the lower left hand corner is a box entitled "IQC FAQ". You should read it if you are having problems. A FAQ is a list of "Frequently Asked Questions". Also, after you get Netscape, check out the "Newbies Corner". Click on the word "Bookmark" on the top menu bar in Netscape, after you install it in step 4. Click on the words "Newbies Corner" from the drop down list that appears. The Newbies Corner is a great place to learn about the Internet! There is also a large "Internet Qwik Connect Help" file that you can use. It is under the icon that looks like a movie clapboard. GETTING HELP STEP 2 - If you have an email connection, please email a brief description of your problem to your providers support department. GETTING HELP STEP 3 - If you are unable to access email to report a problem, then call your provider. Windows 95 vs. Windows 3.1 issues. What's on your PC? OK, so you want to get connected to the internet. Unfortunately, your PC can have a lot of different stuff on it that may or may not need to be addressed. Here's the bottom line. Prior to installing your new Spec.Net Software, one of 5 conditions may exist. We will list them and tell you what to do with your new Spec.Net Software in relation to each case. 1. You use Windows 3.1x and you have never had internet software installed before. Just install the software and have fun. 2. You have Windows 3.1x and you have had or now have installed internet 16 bit software already, like Trumpet Winsock. Just install the software and have fun. Our installer will take care of everything. If you should decide to use your old winsock, with the new programs, you can "uninstall the Distinct winsock" using the blue Uninstall icon. All of your programs will still be configured and work with your old winsock. 3. You have Windows 95 installed, but you have never installed the dial up internet stuff. Just install the software and have fun. Do not try to run 32 bit software, however, because the Distinct program is a 16 bit program. If you decide to install Microsoft's built in 32 bit Winsock, then uninstall the Distinct winsock first using the blue Uninstall icon. Then install the Windows 95 dial up stuff. All your 16 bit programs will work even though you are now using the 32 bit Winsock. 4. You have Windows 95 and are using the 32 bit wsock32.dll to connect to a provider now. If this is the case you will know it because your provider probably helped you to do it. It ain't easy. In this case, just install the software and follow it through step 2 at least, which will configure all of your programs. Then use the Uninstall icon and select "Uninstall Distinct Winsock only" which will put everything back the way it was and your 16 bit programs will still work. 5. You use The Microsoft Network. Bummer. This requires that the 32 bit winsock be used. You can't use a 16 bit winsock for the Microsoft network. To keep using the Microsoft Network, you should install our software, then configure it through step 2. Then uninstall it by selecting "uninstall Distinct winsock only", using the blue uninstall icon. Problem is that you will need to set up the dial up portion for your 32 bit winsock, because even though you can use the Microsoft Network, you can't use the internet programs until you manually set up the Microsoft dialup adapter. For more information about the technical aspects of Spec.Net software and information about possible system problems and error messages please refer to the Spec.Net FAQ which is the read.me file accessible under your Problems icon (?) or on your first install diskette. |
